Anyone seen this?

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200327-can-you-kill-coronavirus-with-uv-light

UV3 doesn't normally penetrate to the surface, due to O3 filtering, but I wonder if ozone is reducing near the surface due to lockdowns?

I realise strat ozone & surface pollutants are not necessarily doing the same job, but wondered.

More excitingly- why can't we do this in our hospitals, supermarkets, tubes etc?

It's the prescription counter. Patients are forbidden to visit our GP practice in person so the pharmacy there is also closed. All prescriptions are now being filled in tesco.

My folks are still getting their prescriptions from the GP surgery.  There is a network of  helpers for over 70s deliveries but there is still the facility to collect in person from the surgery - they have erected all kinds of perspex screens and worked out a system of queuing that makes  it a safe as possible.

In my village they have also stopped dispensing from the surgery, and dumped it onto the local chemist  (also in the village).  He will deliver as well but he's not impressed  that they have behaved in such a "slippery shouldered" way !"

My folks are really struggling to get any food, let alone fresh, in Kent. No slots at all. They are >70 with underlying health conditions.

Meanwhile in Durham, there are numerous independent shops where you can order stuff. I had a search yesterday, found a local greengrocer, and have 40 quids' worth of fresh fruit and veg coming this afternoon!

Cheese and yoghurt are the things that are problematic. My yoghurt has run out. Cheese - got about 2 weeks' worth left. Could order fancy stuff but very expensive. Supermarket seems only place to get basic cheddar for the kids. Main issue with the yoghurt is that without it, it's hard to find something to eat my chia seeds with... the lot of the middle classes.

I'm also just back from my daily exercise. On it I pondered whether the very high number of deaths in Italy and Spain could be indirectly climate related. Is there a possibility that people in southern Europe catch fewer colds than those of us in the cold and wet north? If that is the case (no idea if it is) perhaps they consequently have a lower level of immunity to corona viruses in general? Does anyone know if this has been discussed?

It seems likely if you go into one of these hospitals, you don't come out.

Did see someone put short infection exposure = mild infection. Multiple hits = hospitalisation/death.

Already sending boxes of food to mother-in-law in Venezuela - might have to do it for my folks in Kent! (Though Kent should cost less than Venezuela - the box we currently have en route cost 273 euros delivery/postage!)

Here is an interesting possible side effect of corona virus which should be of relevance to us - it is being said that it is affecting the performance of weather models since far fewer measurements are available than would normally be the case.
I was wondering whether Brian had heard anything about this.

There were a number of police on duty outside our nearest big Tesco this morning.

According to the checkout operator they were there because Tesco staff were having trouble dissuading "large family groups" from entering the store

The shelves were reasonably well stocked apart from the usual suspects: pasta, tinned stuff, bog roll.

There shouldn't be many people around and, in theory at least, they'll have everything from fruit and veg to soft drinks to cleaning products. It's worth paying the extra to avoid having to stand in queues for 20 minutes at Tesco, with people coughing all around and others not obeying the 2m distancing (squeezing past the queue, oblivious to the dirty looks they're getting!)

There seems to have been a more pronounced increase in the last few days. I wonder whether Imperial's figures will adjust again.

Again IMO we should be tightening the lockdown. Even if it turns out the last few days are anomalous or the peak is being reached sooner, the risk should not be taken.

The exponential growth continues. We've still a week or more of this, albeit I'd be surprised if increases of 40% or more happen each day.

"Experts have offered hope that Britain's coronavirus outbreak could peak as early as next Sunday, with the nationwide lockdown over by summer.

Researchers at Imperial College London believe the country's death toll could end in figures as low as 5,700 - but only if Brits strictly obey lockdown rules.
