Thought they said he was not requiring any mechanical ventilation which would include CPAP. I may have misheard.

If recent trends are followed UK deaths will rise to between 550 and 700 today. Another similar rise to between 700 and 850 tomorrow. If lower then it's promising. Missed the hospital admission rates yesterday so aren't sure whether they've peaked.

Will add that the average non-surviver would not be expected to go on a ventilator until tommorow.

We are not out of the woods, but if he is still not on a ventilator on Thursday then I think survival is likely.

Does anyone know what has happened to the Dyson CoVent? I thought they were delivering 10000 this month.

If he's out of ICU today they must be ULTRA confident he's on the mend.

Evn if the timing is in doubt, it can only be good news that he is stable.

I have an I do not understand the degree of criticism of China on here other than the fact that their practices in their markets and treatment of animals most likely caused this and I agree there should be international action to pressure them to rectify this although I suspect they will take action themselves. Whilst criticised for not letting the world know immediately they had no idea what they were dealing with at first. Once they did they seemed to have been much more successful in isolating, testing and tracing than anybody else. They quickly built hospitals and seemed to have more PPE. Whilst everybody else is now looking after themselves they were expected to prioritise us when they were in the position we are now?  What more have we done than they did to stop the spread, and the West had more time and more knowledge. They have a population of 1.4 billion to contain which must be a bit tricky. What about the USA? Why are they not being criticised even more. Their President wasted weeks making jokes about it and even now they are not universally isolating. How does that help the rest of the world in the weeks ahead? Furthermore there was criticism of China waiting a week before releasing the genetic code. Well I thought that was pretty good. Do you think if the outbreak was in the USA they would have found it and released it quicker? You bet they wouldn't. It would have been sent straight to the big U.S drug companies to give them a head start on vaccine development. How do we know that they didn't have to further confirmations and checks before they released it. Imagine the repercussions  if it was wrong. They would have been accused of mis-information. Would our red tape let it out quicker than a week? I'm not sure. The Chinese also offered excess PPE and  equipment to the rest of the world. Compare that with the USA who actively tried to hijack, outbid and intercept other international supplies.

Given their situation, I don't think they have been any worse than anybody else.

Your last line "I don't think they have been worse than anybody else". This is their mess, they created it. They have been so quiet. If it had been us that had killed more than 75,000 to date we would have been on our knees in sorrow, saying it was unforgivable.

There has been nothing from China, that's unforgivable. The world should have them for manslaughter!

Yes China are dealing with it, bully for them. What have they left in their wake!

My daughter spent the first 6 years of her life in and out of hospital with respiratory problems. Fortunately we were always able to id the warning signs early so she only ever required oxygen and never needed mechanical ventilation. As she’s grown bigger and her lungs have too she’s been fine for the past few years.

There have been some quite odd attempts at defending China, with equally odd motivations.  The facts are quite clear and don't need to be re-stated: you have only to look at the clear evidence to know that China is culpable. Choosing wilfully to cover up the outbreak is orders of magnitude worse than any other government's alleged mistakes.

Whats done is done..the past cannot be changed. Anger and bitterness will only consume us. The only time we have is the here and now.

Its a time to be kind, look after ourselves and others and obey government guidance.

Best wishes to Boris Johnson. I wish him a speedy recovery. I've been impressed by his gravitas and humanity. He has stepped up as a true leader. Goodness knows we all need one at the moment.

Stay safe all.

Was it even necessary to put him in ICU in the first place? Sounds like he jumped the queue when it wasn't needed

Anyway, well done to him. He is a strong, virile man mountain and nobody wants Rabbers in charge!

It's easy to get consumed by that now, but it's not the time. We can play the blame game later.

But full production is scheduled for early May. Clearly, the government is anticipating the second wave.

Meanwhile the breathing aid designed by Formula 1 technicians is already being produced and rolled out:

Fascinating report on the foreign pages of today's Times about how China rather than taking a low profile after its behaviour is aggressively building up its military in the South China Sea. The Pentagon wants an extra $16bn to counter it.

My view has always been that China represents a malign threat to our way of life and should be dealt with as a potential adversary rather than the West's new best mate. The pandemic has merely reinforced that view.
