I mentioned in one of the previous threads that a cousin of mine in her mid-50s unfortunately contracted Covid-19 recently and has been in hospital being treated for it for just over a week now. Thankfully, it seems she is now recovering nicely and may be allowed to leave hospital this weekend, all being well.

Something that bothers me, is when Italy was having 800+ dying per day, it was all across the media as a disaster, Sky were running special broadcasts etc about the unfolding disaster.
We are now having numbers of deaths in the high 900’s and there is nowhere near as much mention in the media. All the talk is of Boris / the end of the lockdown.

I find it odd that the deaths in our own nation get less coverage?

Thanks David...your contributions/observations will be invaluable there

There will inevitably be overlaps between both threads, but I hope some of the more general observations moved there will make for better continuity in the running daily thread.

The UK death toll has been updated and is an horrific 980.

More updates:

Latest figures from the health secretary:

19,116 tests were carried out in the UK yesterday - 5,706 tested positive.

19,304 people are in hospital with coronavirus symptoms.

8,958 coronavirus patients have now sadly died.

5.7K have tested positive. That I think is the highest we have seen as well

19.3K are on hospital

Secondly, Cambridge University research suggests there are now three main strains of the virus, with the third variant not being seen in China.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/04/10/uks-coronavirus-epidemic-may-have-seeded-outside-china-new-study/

Using ‘phylogenetic’ techniques that are usually reserved for tracing the origins of our early human ancestors, researchers at Cambridge University discovered that there have been three distinct variants of coronavirus since the disease emerged in Wuhan in December.
Dubbed A, B and C, the three types have followed different paths throughout the globe, possibly because they have mutated to be better at infecting specific populations
Variant ‘A’ is the ancestral strain and is most closely related to the coronavirus found in bats and pangolins. Scientists believe the disease jumped into humans from one of the creatures at Wuhan Market.
The second type ‘B’ - which is most common in mainland China - is derived from ‘A’, and separated by two mutations, while ‘C’ is in turn a ‘daughter’ of ‘B’.
But interestingly it is type ‘C’ that initially infected Britain and Europe and that variant is not found in mainland China at all.

From an article on the BBC website, talking about the urgent search for effective treatments in the absence of a vaccine.

"This is one of the advantages of having a National Health Service. We've never been so co-ordinated, having one big trial, and trying to recruit everybody in the country."

That data is widely across the media today.

They've suddenly woken up to the fact not all deaths are in the 24hr period something we've known for the last 3 weeks.

Managed to find some data on a government website which matches to deaths to a specific day when it happened but it is still a bit lumpy. Might be a case of waiting for the next weekly deaths from the ONS.

The first jump to humans potentially as early as mid-September? Wow.

Unbelieveable!

Police in Rochdale approached a man that was causing a disturbance and explained to him why he he shouldn't be flouting the lockdown. He then got violent with police and bitten one of them on the arm before saying he had COVID-19.

Disappointing that the more usually a virus mutates the less severe it becomes. But that doesn’t seem the case in the current state of reality.

Why did the chief nurse and the Matt Hancock both not answer the question today about how many NHS workers had died.

Matt glibly passed over the the chief nurse who said it was confidential. How is a number confidential?

These briefings really are useless.

Now the prime minister is better. The media really need to address and challenge the government regarding the fact there were 980 deaths
