PR pros lambast new Government 'Stay alert' slogan as 'unclear' and 'unhelpful'

Communications experts believe the update from the 'Stay home, protect the NHS, save lives' to 'Stay alert, control the virus, save lives' will confuse the public and is too vague and open to interpretation, when what is needed is clarity. Some have taken aim at the slogan being leaked to the press.

What does it mean?

Several PR industry leaders speaking to PRWeek were left perplexed by the “ambiguity” of the new messaging.

Ginny Paton, a managing partner responsible for PR at Iris, questioned what ‘stay alert’ actually means.

“It’s vague, unclear and unhelpful,” she said. “If ever there was a message created by committee, this was it. It says nothing while covering everything.

“There was plenty of time and opportunity for clarity to be provided by the time we got to [Sunday night's] briefing. Massive own goal for the government.”

Both Whitty and Vallance suggested in the briefing they’d be gobsmacked if there was wasn’t some form of breakthrough in fighting this virus - whether it’s a vaccine or a successful treatment regime. 

That’s a minor positive in let’s be honest, what has been another frustrating and tiresome day.

It's only when I watched the Press conference I realised how badly the Government have lost the plot and how flustered they are because they know it. I'm afraid The King is in the Altogether.

Well this is all getting so confused and over complicated. A minister on TV said it is now fine to drive anywhere to go for a walk or sunbathe so long as you don't leave England and go home the same day. On another channel a spokesman was asked if it was ok now to drive to their son's university digs and pick up his personal belongings. He said, no because it isn't an essential journey!! They've the lost plot now and they know it.

That's the problem where most can risk assess after the information they have seen. At the far end of the spectrum, about 10% just don't have any common sense or clue however if their instructions are not written down. You get people ringing 999 and wanting the police as their 7 year old refuses to do as their told. No nous, no decision making skills, they just don't get it.

You've probably got another 10% who think themselves too special for the restrictions to apply to them.

Yep, and when you convert that % to people, that's a lot of the population to rely on to work together to get through this.

I think everyone now knows the lockdown should have been earlier but this is pretty damning..

Coronavirus: Earlier Scottish lockdown 'could have prevented 2,000 deaths'

An outbreak began in Edinburgh on 26 and 27 of February at a conference for the sportswear giant Nike. More than 70 employees from all over the world attended the conference at the Hilton Carlton Hotel.

One of the delegates from abroad brought the virus into Edinburgh and infected many of their fellow Nike employees, who then returned to their own countries. At least 25 people linked to this one event are confirmed to have been infected - eight of them resident in Scotland.

Health authorities in Scotland were aware of this potential outbreak by 2 March, but the public were not told about it. 

Despite knowing the virus had been in Scotland since at least late February, Scotland did not ban mass gatherings until 16 March, or go into lockdown until 23 March - the same day as the restrictions were announced by the UK government.

Scotland's own advisory panel - featuring Professor Devi Sridhar, chair of public health at Edinburgh University - was set up two days after the lockdown was introduced.

Prof Sridhar said there had "definitely" been more than enough information about the coming pandemic for action to have been taken much sooner across the UK.

She said: "We should have been acting by mid-February. We could see that this was not easily a virus to be contained."

Scarey! Perhaps if we go into a a tighter lockdown with curfews and army on the streets that might convince them something's up.

There's a virus hospital special on BBC2 right now and an eye opener. This should be on BBC1. Rather than hearing about numbers in updates, people should see real life what is going on. It would ram it home to a few more.

We took delivery of a sofa ordered in early December this afternoon. Today was the first day of deliveries since lockdown started.

So the opinions early on that this whole thing was a shitshow have proved correct.
