I’ve been battling with people all afternoon, the usually lines

‘1976 was hotter’
‘Its summer’
‘We’ve had heatwaves before’
‘Media Scaremongering’
‘Other countries have heat like this all the time’

People really have no idea and understand how hot 40C and successive days.

They all think it’s like when there on a beach on holiday sipping ice cold cocktails. And I am sorry, it’s seems to always be the same people who refused to wear masks. Sorry if that’s a generalisation. It’s like the GB news crowd.

So - we have a few days to prepare.

Anyone want to share tips to keep cool on both days (and particularly to get some sleep on Monday night!).

I’ll be keeping all south facing curtains closed (I think it’s also best to keep windows closed as outside temp likely higher than inside).

Isn’t there one about hanging a cold wet towel in front of a fan? Also spraying water on the bed sheets?

Any tips gratefully received (and no, I can’t afford to buy aircons for all the bedrooms at the moment!).

A concern is the red will be issued at the weekend which makes it more difficult for some businessess to make plans. One potential problem is the London Underground. If a tube train without air conditioning gets stuck in a tunnel during the Monday afternoon rush hour the outcome could be awful.

A work meeting I was supposed to be preparing a presentation for this week, which was due to take place on Monday, has already been postponed. (Which is good as I have been mostly looking at charts rather than actually working )

This is why it’s ridiculous if there’s only a 24 hr lead time on a red warning. A situation as you describe would be entirely avoidable by shutting the tube down.

They are far too cautious but clearly we need to hear urgent warnings from Govt, but Boris didnt bother going to Cobra today

It may only hit 100f here on Monday and Tuesday, but I have already taken the decision to shut shop on both days.

Just had a Southern Water truck go past, they dropped off 12x 2L bottles of "Courtesy Water" at my door. Hmm!

This could well be a harbinger of things to come elsewhere.

EDIT: Yup, another pipe burst, this time a few miles up the road. Three in four days... and plenty of £25 compensation payments to come. Oh well, that's what happens when Southern Water don't spend money on maintaining things.

At least the heatwave hasn't yet arrived. This happening when it's in the high 30s doesn't bear thinking about!

I'm dreading it. I absolutely hate really hot weather. The only consolation is that I work Wed - Fri so will be able to stop in with all the doors and windows shut. Our house had some extra insulation cladding a few years ago and I've found that as well as keeping the warmth in in Winter it keeps the heat out in Summer. The cats will also not be allowed out!

I notice ECM gives us a hot beast from the East at 240hrs. 20C uppers in a pattern that might give -10C uppers in January.

Just crept above the 25c average daily max for July so far in this heatwave, with many days to come to increase this for sure.

This reminds me so far of July 2018 where the average here in rural Berkshire on my vp2 with daytime FARS was 26.5c average daily max.

Albeit we had a few days of 29.7 and 29.9, we only had 3 days above 30c that month, which shows how consistent the month was as a whole.

Will we beat that this month, who knows, but we may well be quite close going on current models.

Some fairly big looking convection off the north coast of Spain this evening. Notable as that particular region is currently under pretty high and  stable heights:
