Genuine scorcher in portsmouth despite neither of the local metoffice stations being warm.

Gosport 28.4C

Gosport 28.8C

Portsea area 27C

Around town though felt more like 32C+ but no thermometer.

North end/ hilsea 31C - though I think more around 30C

In other words, it's pretty good.

My new one is just a max/min recorder.

Made it! We just hit 30.0 °C late this afternoon, beating last Sunday's 28.1 °C by a good margin. A bit of a nerve-jangler: we got to 29.8 °C about 14.00, but it just wouldn't go any higher. The max was actually reached just before 18.00, ahead of what seems to have been a short-lived thundery shower.

Hot spot today was Heathrow with 31.4C

Wisley will have been close behind although no maximum available at the moment for this site. But it did reach 30.8C at 1700

29.4ºC here today, equal warmest day (with July 1st 2009) since 2006.

I'm a little disappointed that we couldn't break the 30ºC barrier though.

Does anyone know of any site where I can find the maximums (to one decimal place) for the offical weather stations today? Looking for Boscombe Down in particular, seeing as it showed 29.7°C at both 4pm and 6pm... curious as to the actual max tia

Certainly been hot here in Exeter today and I'm not far from the airport. I took refuge in the shade of a tree at the park, as my south-facing bedroom was oppressive. 31 degrees is certainly not what I'm used to being from the north. Enjoyed it though, far more than the soggy weather there was down here last summer.
Took a shower a mere 30 minutes ago, and the fresher feel lasted all of five minutes. Oh well.

How much effort would it be for the Met Office to offer a 'UK extremes' feature that shows the maximum for each official station on the map? Maybe I should suggest it in an email

Its +23c here still, and +25c when I walked in the house having been out since 4pm

Edit: all my neighbours are out in the gardens, I'm drinking tea and listening to the owls calling across the street! The tawney owls are soooo loud, and even land in the tree within a few feet of us when we're outside.

Probably the Vue over-reading again slightly. Maybe being slightly further inland from the river has a small effect on the temperature too?

I spent the majority of the day working at Heathrow and it felt incredibly hot there! Not surprising it was the highest max in the UK because you could definitely feel it!

I can imagine the river was a popular spot today, the Thames riverside at Hampton, Hampton Court, Teddington and Richmond really is beautiful at this time of year! (minus the flower show traffic )

Has anybody noticed the huge temperature range at Exeter for the 13th?

I'm not sure if there's two stations and I'm getting mixed up, but according to the Met Office UK overview for 13th July, Exeter recorded the lowest minimum of 7.7c:

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_latest_weather.html

And I think it maxed at somewhere around 31c? That would make a temperature range of around 23c!

Temperature already several degrees into the 20's... the odd thing is I keep forgetting that it's not even 10am

Slept surprisingly well last night but only after the seemingly mandatory fight with a non-existent person in my room at around 1am. Whenever I get hot, I have that sort of dream, but only once, after which I tend to sleep fine. Does make the idea of one day sharing a double bed seem risky though

I'm loving the warm mornings eating breakfast outside. If I could sleep early and wake early (yeah... dream on) then I would, as 6-9am is IMO an amazing time of day during a summer heatwave.

Well there goes 25°C at 10:20 in the morning! That's about a degree ahead of yesterday at the same time. Interesting when combined with slightly lower humidity.

For the automated Met Office and BBC location forecasts to verify, the temperature has to only climb 3°C from there I know less warm air is trying to feed down from the north, but it's such a gentle airflow that I can't see it having much effect today. Amazingly even GFS only goes for 29°C.

All very interesting to me, I do like it when the weather is more extreme (in a relative sense) than the model/forecast
