Good ton by Root, slow but good

Runs are coming quicker now, 458 ahead.

Bell has had two very good Test matches.

Incidentally, the 3 Aussie innings combined, Agar is the only one that has a combined total in three figures.

And on a more serious note, I presume now we wait for Bell to get his 4th consecutive Ashes century before declaring?

England have got to watch the weather for Monday. I don't think Monday is a given for being a totally dry day.

Pointless batting on it really is.

If we leave it until late first session tomorrow then get any rain Monday, it would be ridiculous. Wouldn't be the first time England have batted on too long in this situation and its cost them a result.

Obviously the Aussies are now out of this, so I'd have been tempted to move Pieterson up the batting order - smash a few around the ground and then give the Aussies ten overs before close.

Pointless batting on it really is. I hope it rains all day Monday now. Cook has spent too much time under über cautious Strauss. Is he really expecting this shite Aussie side to perform a fourth innings world record on this wicket?

I'm getting annoyed. They have got enough runs, they want to maximise the time they have to bowl the Aussies out. What is awkward for the Aussies? Having to bat with 30 minutes left. Playing onto the end of the day and possible even a little bit more tomorrow is a weak tactic.

Nah, gotta let the kid gets his double century.

Bat for 40 minutes tomorrow morning.  Then all home by tea

Ok here is a Q

If Cook continues his poor form with the bat and England keep winning, does he stay as Captain? Does he keep his place in the side but lose the captaincy or does he get dropped altogether

If the reason for not declaring is to let Root get his 200, that's pathetic. We should have declared as soon as he made his 150

We're where I expected, with Cook wanting at least 500 runs in the bank and 2 days left. Even if there's some rain on Monday and they lose an hour or two that's still the thick end of 150 overs.

Unless Swann's spinning finger drops off I expect him to be key. If it's turning enough there's always Root and Peterson in reserve.... :-)

Holding made a good point on the commentary last night regarding 4th innings run chases at Lords.

If you look at the stats there are a number of successful chases in the 300's and high 200's with just 1 to 3 wickets down implying that many more runs could have been achieved if required. Lords isn't so bad as a 4th innings place to bat.

However Australia are so useless with the bat that I agree with Matty, time to end the England innings and get the Aussies in now. Maybe let Joe Root smash a few boundaries early on to get his 200, but that is just me wanting to see him get a double ton but probably best for the team just to get the Aussies straight in.

Personally I'd tell Root he has 45 minutes to get his 200 and England 600 ahead....
And it'll still be largely done and dusted by stumps...

A win by an innings and 400-odd would be good in terms of the Aussie mindset!
