A flashback to the 80s today. Woken up by thunder, then more thunder rumbling around for, oh, at least two and a half hours (still going now, in fact), steamy outside and an overnight low of 18.9C... the warmest night since I started recording (in 2000).

The first properly warm night of the spell, ie an official minimum above 20C. Heathrow min to 6am was 20.7C. Even St James's Park dropped to 19.0C surprisingly.

The models seem less keen to prolong the proper heat into the weekend now. I really hope that isn't it for summer weather - these past few weeks have been fantastic and I don't want to be shivering in 20C maxes through August.

During still moments - very intermittent winds today - the sunshine is absolutely roasting!

The temp has risen to 24.2°C which is around about the margin for home-grown thunderstorms. There are a few messy towers trying to build, but it's not very convincing at the moment.

Must note, though, that the storms of late have tended to explode from acorns to oak trees (not literally, that would make for strangely shaped clouds ) in the space of an hour

Heathrow 29.3c at 3pm not bad for such a cloudy day. Definitely feels like one of the most humid days in London for many years.

Struggled to reach 25°C this afternoon - almost had no heat to go with the no thunderstorms I was delivered earlier. Overall a very dissapointing day in terms of what was observed relative to the potential that existed.

The actual temps really did jump up and down as areas of cloud came and went, yet the feel of things was more or less constant.

If it wasn't for the fact that temps look to stay in the mid-20's through Friday and then climb higher again on Saturday, I'd be in a right huff this evening. As it is, I'm taking it as a typical non-event - sighing heavily and then moving on, much like I often had to do last winter.

I half expect to see a book on the shelves soon called 'how to avoid most of everything' written by W. Hampshire

Received data from my home in West Ewell which was lovely warm 20.9C to 31.8C max this afternoon and my local Epsom weather station recorded amazing 22.7C dp.  Is that good for you Matty?

Down to 15.7°C here after a rapid cooldown around sunset - it was still over 20°C at 8pm.

Window's wide open, setting me up for a night of heavy sleeping I hope

I don't mind so long as the maximums keep hitting the mid-20's and not the low 20's as per the automated Met Office location forecast (where does that get it's data from? It rarely ever matches the raw GFS output).

Blimey - just looked on xcweather and my region is tying with the far NW of Wales for the lowest temperatures in the UK!
