Dodged all but one shower today. Thundery line is now moving through the IOW and Southampton - a bit east of the model projections. Another streak of intense rainfall is soon to pass just NW of here. There have been a number of torrential showers within a mile of here according to the radar, but due to extensive cloud cover I would never have known!

Tomorrow doesn't look very conducive down here, with the models keeping the shower activity supressed across the far S (and much of the SE). The next noteworthy rain looks to be from a 'blob' on Tuesday. It looks like it'll be moving at quite a pace, so probably 2-3 hours of rainfall on the cards.

An ideal day for my little patch to see some big showers here today.with a WSW wind and a converging wind from both the Bristol and English Channel wouldn't be surprised if I saw thunder today as well as high rainfall totals. Already big towering CB clouds around and the first one is literally tipping it down as I type.

Lots of pop-up showers today, nowhere immune from seeing heavier ones but they will tend to form into bands running roughly SW to NE, so some places could get away with not seeing too much activity, some will get soaked.

6z GFS shows modest CAPE over most areas of between 500 and 700 j/kg, and LI's of -3. As yesterday, lightning in some of these cells is likely, but not intense.

Some strikes already been recorded over Wales, SW England and NW England.

6mm of rain already today. It was a similar situation to this that caused the devastating Boscastle floods some years back though the angle of the line of showers is more inland today running from Bodmin moor between Dartmoor and Exmoor and up across the Mendip Hills and Bath/Bristol area and then stretching further NE across North Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire towards Norfolk or the Wash. I don't expect this line to change much through the day so the above areas must expect local flash flooding problems and intermittent strong lightning throughout the day and into the evening.

The MetO's own one on the new version of the site is usually pretty accurate:

Some pretty loud bangs and flashes as that lot passed by. In a lull at the mo.

Matty, I use the Met Office own overlay one on their invent site. This is the link showing Radstock currently. It's generally very accurate and this morning is no exception.
