Bastar-d-i may be persona non grata in forecasting circles, but it's going a bit far to say his name is a swear word. Oh, I see what's happened.

MET Office must have changed this after 7am this morning as I had a look and still saying cold option at that time.

I've heard from a couple of people on Twitter that the ECM seasonal model has gone cold for Jan to Mar.

This afternoon's update remains pretty much the same, with no mention of cold weather developments in general:

UK Outlook for Wednesday 31 Dec 2014 to Wednesday 14 Jan 2015:
There is no strong signal in weather patterns during this period. However, the most likely scenario is for a continuation of unsettled and, at times, windy weather, especially in western parts of the UK, with eastern parts seeing the best of any dry weather. Temperatures are generally expected to be around, or a little above, average for the time of year. There is a chance of some overnight and morning frost and fog in places - this will be more likely across northern areas where there is also a chance of some snow on higher ground.

If the MetO are right most of us are likely to be on the home run to spring without seeing a single flake of snow.

Goodness! If I'd said the 'MetO forecast takes us through to mid-October and then we're on the home run to winter', there would have been either no response or these...

Some folk really need to chill out. If it snows it snows. If it doesn't it doesn't. Spring will be here before you know it, of that I'm certain.

Perhaps the most relevant part of Brian's quote from the Met is " It would be interesting to know what this is based on, especially as the background 'noise' on the Internet has all been about a potential cold spell " .

The home run to Spring is mid January onwards, so there's no suggestion from anyone that Winter will be a write off, nor that there won't be colder interludes.

Too many knee jerk posts IMHO..........
