I'm going to suggest to Brian that SSW and all variations of it are added to the banned words

Some of you are obsessed with something you hadn't even heard of a couple of years ago. What happened to melanie whatever it was from a year or two back that was the trendy word then?

In reality we know even with the best intentions it all comes down to a Buzz post from Brian saying how the event at some point in the future is on a knife edge.

It must be exhausting for some people.  All that wasted analysis.

Yep MetO now suggesting average temps out to month end.

Well the BBC forecast said the warmest New Years Day record max temp at risk today? Apparently stands at 15.6C . Certainly no sign of any cold in the outlook and with lengthening days the chances of decent and long lasting snow for us southerners sadly receding fast.

I agree- we've had more frosts than last winter and the one before combined.
Things will change by Feb I'm sure of it.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 7 Jan 2015 to Friday 16 Jan 2015:

A cold and fine start across southern and eastern UK on Wednesday, but heavy rain and gales across the northwest will spread southeastwards to reach most parts by Thursday. This will clear the southeast late on Thursday with brighter, showery weather following. These showers will be wintry on hills and may merge to form longer spells of rain at times. Thereafter, the weather will alternate between unsettled conditions with spells of rain and colder, clearer, more showery interludes. The drier and brighter periods may be brief, with the best of these across southern and eastern England. It will remain fairly windy, with gales at times mainly across northern Britain. Temperatures will vary day to day, but will tend to average out slightly above normal overall

UK Outlook for Saturday 17 Jan 2015 to Saturday 31 Jan 2015:

It is most likely to remain unsettled and often windy for much of the rest of January. Periods of dull weather with rain will be interspersed with brief colder, clearer showery spells and frosty nights. Some showers may fall as snow, mainly across northern hills. The drier and more settled weather may become more dominant across the south towards the end of the period, but confidence on this remains low at present.

Tallyho_83 please don't copy and paste entire forecasts from other sites. I don't like my content being lifted and posted elsewhere without a link back to it so I don't see why other independents should have to put up with this. You could just write your own summary and link back to their site instead of copying and pasting. It's called etiquette and having good manors.

More tosh from Madden/Exacta Weather:

http://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/irish-weather-arctic-conditions-bring-4917588

Top quote: 'He added: “Ireland missed the worst of the snow and cold that the UK experienced at times throughout December, but that looks like it’s going to change."'

Despite the worst it could throw at us, December was warmer than average.

Also: "Forecaster with Exacta Weather James Madden said the prolonged bitter weather is likely to stretch into February."

It has to arrive first!

Looking at MOGREPS and ECM postage stamps for today out to 20 January they show some increase in amplification but the generally progressive pattern is maintained as the Met O forecast says

Clearest indication that this is another phantom cold spell. Perhaps the best we can do is a repeat of last week

If the MetO forecasters do not come on board fairly soon after these synoptics appear in virtual space, then any cold spells should be confined to said virtual space and expectations must remain low.
Yes they are conservative but only very rarely make mistakes in longer term trends. On a sliding scale of who I listen to with 10 being biblical and 0 being complete nonsense, I'd put these text outlooks at an 8 or 9 (with the likes of Madden and PC on 0 at best, and The Express regurgitation of Madden at -4).
