Saturday morning looks interesting. Chance of a covering for some; even in England.

Furthest the EURO4 will go. During Friday night into the early hours of saturday the rain will turn to snow on its NW edge. Favoured parts include west and south yorkshire and the north midlands. 

Quite late in the season for a severe weather warning for snow but given the charts I'm not surprised. Not normal but certainly not unprecedented:

This is the Chief Forecaster's assessment: "A cold front will push southwards across northern Scotland overnight introducing colder air and more wintry conditions, chiefly above 300 metres where 1-4 cm accumulations are expected. Across Shetland the snow levels are likely to be lower with 1-2 cm possible to low levels briefly."

Already more official snow reports in a single morning than there were the whole of last weekend. Snow is right down to sea level in the far north.

Interesting situation tonight; as rain interacts with cold air across Northern England and the north midlands. It will turn to snow; but it will also die back at the same time; its really a matter of what happens first. If the rain is slightly more intense than expected there could be a surprise covering for the likes of sheffield, leeds e.c.t

Having seen the lunchtime midlands weather forecast, there may even be something for the Staffordshire Moorlands out of this.

As ever in this country, you can never be sure it will snow until the white stuff actually falls out of the sky.

Quite obvious sleet now at 2.5C however it's not particularly heavy anymore - and so far wind is fairly light so not too awful out there.

Yes. The cold is turning up.. just as the rain fizzles away. Away from a dusting maybe covering on the high Pennines, I can't see this amounting to much at low levels here.

Its why these events tend to favour the north midlands; by the time it gets there more of it will be snow

No settling as just switched over in the last 15 mins. It's the wet variety unsurprisingly. Nice and late in the season.

Really think this event has been underestimated; the real fun hasn't even begun yet. But look on the radar at that nasty stuff just north of wales; that is going to bring some snow for the midlands tonight.
