So rare, it snowed there last year as well!

Hah. That's more snow than we've had here in years...

To be honest, I now know that as soon as that first pulse of really cold air gets into the US our winter is over,

Personally, I wouldn't mind going for a week without temperatures getting to over 4°C (and on two of those days, the maximum temperature has equalled 4°C with the botanic gardens in Edinburgh being slightly warmer than that on four of those days) if we were actually getting some proper cold weather with some decent frosts and some snow to go with that. However, we haven't exactly been getting that either and so, the problem is really down to the lack of any significant diurnal temperature range during the last few days, rather than it actually being all that cold.

Today'll add a bit more to it, 8 degrees with drizzle after an overnight low of 5C, following on from the 10C yesterday... more like early March than mid January.

Your figure though shows that if anything the temperature gradient across the UK has been more marked than usual this last month - no wonder there's such a wide range of views of the winter so far on here!

That in itself, is enough to confirm that there is a big variation of temperatures across the country just now, even though the temperatures aren't varying much at the moment from one day to the next, or even between daytime and night-time.

For here, that colder than average anomaly has been due to the complete absence of any sort of mild weather during this month so far (which is a complete flip from that run of mild winters which we had before this one), and the fact that the maximum temperatures have been quite low. Apart from on those few occasions where we have had an air frost though, the minimum temperatures haven't been all that cold during this month so far.

Certainly hasn't been 1C colder than average here over the past month. In fact I've recorded an above average mean of 3.2C against an average of 3.1C. 23rd December returned a mean of 10.8C - nearly 8C above average for what should be the coldest time of the year but that is missing from this graph http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/global_monitoring/temperature/tn03091_30.gif

NE Scotland in fact saw the greatest positive anomalies in December with Lossiemouth and Kinloss both 1C above average. The converse will be true in summer no doubt

This month so far is running 1C below average at 2.2C but unlike December, which was above average, has brought no snow. It's been a putrid cold rain gloomfest. More muck on the way for the next few days as well

Whilst I am very interested in the upcoming weather patterns, I can't help thinking Edinburgh will fare badly from this type of setup... Haven't seen much snow here over the past few years - it's been as bad as the 90s!

I just hope some of the showers make it this far East.

Yet another dark dismal day from this atrocious January which offers nothing to the weather enthusiast bar misery and tedium in equal measure

Only 11.8mm rain this month but barely a dry day. Just endlessly damp and drizzly with today looking like the 7th completely sunless day of the month. Wind coming from SE again with a low of 5.1C and unlikely to get much higher than the current 5.8C. Simply vile and the worst weather anywhere on earth

Absolutely sick of it. This run of dire Saturdays is as bad as the past couple of winters. The last sunny Saturday that managed at least 50% of possible sunshine was way back on 18th November.

What a depressing waste of time winter is nowadays. Hedgehogs have the right idea when it comes to winter. If only humans could do the same.

Agreed with above... In the far SW all weather is modified to become totally boring...
How can I justify this!! I get excited if the temperature actually goes below zero!! and in the summer if it goes above 20 degrees!!
Next week the country is subject to a strong WNW-NW flow which will give snow to most places above 100msl. There is the prospect of heavy snow from disturbances running along this flow.... Great!!!(except for the possibility of the 100mph winds😳)
Here though we will get cold rain some overnight hail and the usual 50-60 mph gusty winds.
I was brought up in the Derbyshire Peak District where we actually got decent weather!!! It's nice down here but the lack of real weather will probably see me moving back up north one day...
My snow fix will be reading the comments on here, looking at the web cams of Buxton and Matlock Bath and giving my old folks a call who still live up there. That's better moan finished with...

There are a few notable points about this month's weather so far.

First of all, you would think that it would be very difficult to get a duller than average winter month, especially since the winter solstice (the time when very little in the way of sunshine is actually available) is still less than a month ago. Yet, that is exactly what we are heading onwards this month. I know that this is Scotland and that we don't get much sunshine here, but I'm a bit sick and tired of those constant grey skies which I keep seeing day in, day out and it is got to the point now, where there is virtually no point in looking outside to see what the weather is actually like now, since I already know that this is what I am likely to be seeing.

So far, this has actually been a colder than average here so far, although we are managing to achieve that is a bit beyond my comprehension. A lot of that has to do with the fact that we haven't had any significant spells of mild weather during this month so far. We have also had one day which wasn't far away from being an official ice day but apart from that, there hasn't been a single day during this month so far where the maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank has been less than 3.6°C.

On top of that, we have only had three days so far where there has been an official air frost, and since we are now halfway through what is supposed to be the coldest month of the year on average, that is very abysmal indeed.

This month started off on a very wet note as well with a lot of rain, but it is then dried up quite a lot over the last week or so and what are left with now, is the most boring pattern of weather which I can ever think of, where absolutely nothing of note, ever seems to be happening. With that in mind, this is fast becoming a month which I will be more than happy to see the back of.

I'm gearing up for a huge let-down this week and think now we'll not see lying snow.

What's worse is that the runner-low looks set to have any snow on its northern edge missing us - but we'll more than likely get the damaging winds.

Some places will get more than enough snow but not the Merseyside/West Lancs/Gtr Manc/Cheshire region below at best 200m.
