UK Outlook for Wednesday 6 Nov 2013 to Friday 15 Nov 2013:

After a chilly, frosty start, scattered blustery showers for most on Wednesday, but outbreaks of rain are expected over southern parts of the country. Rain should clear to leave another showers day on Thursday with bright spells and strong winds. It is likely to stay largely unsettled thereafter with showers or longer spells of rain, locally heavy, particularly in the northwest, where it will also be windy at times. There will, however, be some drier and brighter interludes, the best of these in the south and east, and it should remain generally mild for the time of year. Later in the period, generally more settled conditions are possible in the south, giving mild days but chilly nights with overnight fog. Northern areas are likely to stay on the unsettled side.

UK Outlook for Saturday 16 Nov 2013 to Saturday 30 Nov 2013:

Early November's mostly unsettled conditions across northern and western regions are thought likely to persist through much of the rest of the month. As such, rainfall amounts here are more likely than not to be above average and it may also be windy at times. Further south and east, rainfall accumulations are considered likely to be nearer average, implying slightly more settled conditions with drier, brighter periods interspersed with occasional bouts of unsettled weather. Drier periods here may, however, be accompanied by overnight and morning fog patches. Taking the country as a whole, temperatures during this period are more likely than not to be near, or perhaps slightly above average throughout, leading to a lower risk of overnight frost than can usually be expected at this time of year.

Peter Gibbs said snow over the mountains down to 200m later tonight as the rain comes in.  He did pause/stutter over it, which makes me think he may have made an error???  We will see in the morning, but not many mountains come in at 200m here, think you would need to be 7/800m before you'd call anything a mountain other than a hill, perhaps even higher

As Glenogle says though, 200m is certainly not a mountain by Scottish standards, in fact it is barely a hill.

Sorry nemi, you misunderstood I think. I understood his terminology, it was the level I was questioning. Most other forecasts I had seen said snow on hills perhaps down to 4/500m. Peter knocked 200m off that, which is quite a big drop

Quotes

"Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “We are looking at a potentially paralysing winter, the worst for decades, which could at times grind the nation to a halt.”"

"Forecasters warned in October that the entire UK faces a horror freeze, bringing brutal winds and fierce blizzards. Long-range forecasts predicted “record-breaking snowfall” and low temperatures, possibly until February."

"Daytime temperatures in the North are expected to hover in single figures for the next few days, falling to zero overnight, with harsh frosts likely." - WOW - temps below 10 degree C in November in the North shock

"A bleak winter is now seen as very much on the cards, with the first major snowfall expected in weeks." SHOCK - weather forecaster expects major snowfall in winter...

I'm still waiting for the big November freeze Powell forecast a few weeks ago

(Libel warning) He may be a decent bloke, but as forecasting goes the guy is a prat of the highest order.

Edit: I have to quote this:

Daytime temperatures in the North are expected to hover in single figures for the next few days, falling to zero overnight, with harsh frosts likely.

Temperatures down to zero? Harsh frosts? Technically it's barely a touch of frost.
WTF Powell, get a f***ing grip.

If the rainfall graphics on yesterday evenings BBC forecasts for today were from the NAE, then it's got it hopelessly inaccurate again. It's several hundred miles further west.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 13 Nov 2013 to Friday 22 Nov 2013:

After a largely fine but cold start to Wednesday with sunny spells, strong winds and heavy rain are likely to push east across most areas through the day. Thursday will be rather cold and breezy with sunny spells and showers, showers heaviest across western areas with snow possible over higher ground. Temperatures will be generally cold overnight but near average by day. Thereafter, a north/south split is likely to develop across the UK, with the best of any dry and bright weather across the south but with more in the way of rain and stronger winds across northern parts. It will be cold enough for snow at times across northern hills with a greater risk of frost and fog in the south during clearer spells.

UK Outlook for Saturday 23 Nov 2013 to Saturday 7 Dec 2013:

Confidence significantly decreases regarding which weather type is most likely to dominate through this forecast period. There are currently no strong signals indicating significantly above or below average temperatures or rainfall. However, the projections suggest that precipitation amounts are more likely to be just above the seasonal average than below. This would suggest that the weather remains changeable with spells of showers or longer spells of rain, particularly in the north and west, interspersed with drier and clearer periods, giving a greater threat of overnight frost and fog. Temperatures are also more likely to be just below average than above, and this would give a greater threat of wintry precipitation, particularly over hills.
