There's definitely something to my north at the moment, but I think it's rain or sleet, as the temperature outside is still 2.4c

Nice radar - I love the precipitation type - key on there which clearly shows how Exeter has missed out - As you can see - that streamer just a few miles to the west of us has produced wet snow/sleet on and off throughout the whole day over central & mid -Devon (Dartmoor).

The 12Z runs have picked up on some light ppn moving N to S down the middle of the UK, but it's only a weak signal at this stage.
The last few frames of the 5min radar is showing light snow across N England moving south so maybe a dusting in places.

But it does show once again that during this period we cant rely just on models with regards likely precipitation.

Uneventful week for the SW with no snow or sleet as I thought then! But at least we are guaranteed some harsh frosts and dry sunny days.

You're right. I'd much rather have to wrap up in clothes because it's cold and uncomfortable than wear lighter clothing and not hear people moaning about being cold.

Each to their own I suppose. Cold weather with no snow is the absolute worst possible weather type for me. Awful, just awful. At least the days are starting to draw out. I got home on Friday at 5pm and it wasn't dark. Result!

The worst weather is overcast skies with drizzle and damp weather/gloom. - Like December 2014 was up until Boxing day. But I would rather cold and dry than mild and wet. We had enough wind & rain last winter to last us a decade.

UK Outlook for Monday 16 Feb 2015 to Monday 2 Mar 2015:

Whilst changeable Atlantic conditions will likely prevail at the start of the period, mainly in the north, it currently looks most probable that a period of more settled weather will dominate in the south. This leaves most parts of the UK with slightly drier, and colder conditions than average with overnight frosts and patchy fog likely at times

ZZZzzzz

That takes us nicely to Spring.

Something else to ponder when talking of Beeb forecasts, for us who get BBC Northwest tonight. We now get a week ahead forecast on a Monday night.

This week it was completely predictable. Cold, Dry, Frost, fog. Warmer by the weekend,

I wonder if the TV forecasts are going to reflect the text forecast for SE England today, rather than hint at a rather dry picture and show graphics of showery rain and temps of 6c.

Yesterdays performance was shocking based on what model output was showing.

Forecast summary

  • Regional

  • UK 5 days

  • UK 6-30 days

Regional forecast for London & South East England

Wednesday:

Early patchy ice on untreated surfaces. Sunny or bright intervals and scattered snow showers, most likely across Kent, and some becoming heavy leading to slight accumulations. Feeling very cold. Maximum Temperature 3C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Feeling very cold by day, with widespread frosts overnight, locally severe. Some bright or sunny spells, but also snow showers, these heavy still Thursday, then becoming lighter and more isolated.

Why are the written media especially so bad at reporting weather? Even quality press are poor at times.

From today's Times and it starts with "Sweeping gales from Siberia...." What gales? The air isn't coming directly from Siberia.

"5 days of sub zero weather...." What model shows such temperatures? Temperatures are widely expected to get above zero during the day...

"predicted to leave the UK colder than Greenland" Greenland is a huge place, the interior is definitely going to be colder than the UK

Even the quote by the Met Office spokesperson says 3C-4C. That's not sub zero, it ain't going to be colder than Greenland...

It's media hype and inaccurate reporting.
