The frontal part of the storm was not a lot to be honest. Windy but little rain

Squall went through here at 5am. Torrential rain and wind and as others reported seem to switch off within seconds. Unbelievable weather tekkers!!

Got into bed at 10.30 pm, fell straight away to sleep. Alarm clock woke me up as normal at 6.30 am - wind had fallen dead calm by then.

However, going by what I've read on facbook/twatter, it seems that the squall line did pack a punch as it passed over us here at Folkestone at around 5.30 am but otherwise everything seems largely intact - probably because there aren't anything left to get broken as our climate seem to be more akin to the Falkland Islands  Mind you, there is that distinctive scent of brine in the air, always get that after a wind storm.
It is still cloudy and raining, my rain gauge had picked up 12.0 mm since the last reset at 9 pm last night. I reckon I could add another couple of mm to it due to the sheltered location of my gauge (I only have a small east-facing back yard).

The River Eden has broken its banks in the usual places it would appear. Hopefully not much in the way of damaging flooding tho. The rain was incessant yesterday evening and through the night and the winds were howling but no noticeable damage this morning. But a lull this morning has been rudely interrupted by some heavy hail showers and the winds do seem to be picking up again.

The Telegraph are reporting this morning that a gust of 101mph was recorded at Great Dunsell in Cumbria....I'm guessing they mean Great Dun Fell! And seeing as it's exposed and nearly 3000 ft up it's not a big surprise really is it? The Telegraph, with their Live feed of 'Cyclone Storm Rachel', is fast becoming the Daily Express in terms of its weather reporting. Sorry, the reporting of weather at the moment is getting me all wound up including the references to mini tornado's.

I'm confused and happy to be corrected? BBC are also reporting a Great Dunsell weather station recording a 101mph gust? So does it exist and am I wrong?!

Has the storm been and gone as here in Essex looks to me as we got away lightly.

For the south yes. The secondary n punch is starting to show up on XC weather now, supposedly coming as far south as NW England and N Wales at about 6pm.

Another wild night and still so stormy. I live in a top floor exposed flat though open towards the south and southwest! Recent gusts of 70mph in Edinburgh and the pressure reading is 968mb off the scale on my aneroid! It's currently 948mb in Stornoway. Still snow on the Pent lands and more to come later and tomorrow

don't know whether the wind direction makes a difference. SSW in my neck of the woods means the wind is coming straight down from the pentlands, it's quite a jaunty little drop of about 1200ft in just over a mile and a half. Last week it was a straight westerly.

The winds never got particularly hairy here, but the rain was torrential for a time. Love hearing it battering on the window when I'm snuggled up in bed.

Some hefty gusts here now and I can hear things banging and rattling outside.  With all the warnings we've had about this storm you'd think people would tie things down.   A restless night is on the cards methinks.

We didn't do too badly in this area.  We had very little rain overnight and no obvious wind damage.  It's less windy this morning.

It seems likely its a typo (intended to be Great Dun Fell). But if so, its interesting that the mistake has been copied by the BBC, Telegraph and various other weather sites (excluding the met office). Some news agencies even cite the met office for the 101mph Great Dunsell record. Assuming the above is true, they would appear to have made a mistake insofar as the source of this information is concerned:

Telegraph: "The Met Office has revealed that winds of 101mph were reported in Great Dunsell, Cumbria"

Who's copying who? Surely the likes of BBC, telegraph etc. would verify the source and accuracy of information before publishing it in a national / front page story?

So far...

Little rain last night and the wind simply hasn't been a factor. Due to increase later, but to date a non-event.

I think they mean Great Dun Fell . I think Aonach Mor at 111 mph was the highest mainland gust.

Considerable increase in wind speed over the last half an hour or so as the trough moves through. Hilbre weather station (just under 2km off the NW coast of Wirral) recording gusts of 65mph - not exceptional but a decent winter storm nonetheless.

After a relative lull in wind speed today, it's now whipped up again.

Just a standard system like we see several of most winters here, thankfully. Not overly windy, although pretty wet.
