So immigrants are dashing to get here because of our climate? What an odd comment.

Apart from 4 summer-like days, May and June (so far) have been terrible up here in the Scottish capital. It's been cloudy and cool 12-15 C Max Temps. We had sunny spells yesterday and 18 C but rain forecast today, tomorrow and Friday. The MetO forecast is dire until mid-July!!

This particular pattern with persistent north-westerlies, has been especially poor for the north.

Ahem. Pure luck but not a bad punt for first 2 weeks of July eh? Except it MAY actually be record breaking after all.

However, I believe there will be a prospect that the Azores High will link with the large blocking high over Scandinavia to give much of the UK an extremely warm and dry period for the first two weeks of July after perhaps a few unsettled days at the start.

With winds tending to be coming from a southerly quarter, temperatures in the south could soar into the high twenties, and possibly low thirties at times, although not record-breakingly hot.

These high temperatures, combined with high humidity will be a recipe for afternoon and evening showers and storms, most of these centred around the southern half of the UK.

One of the many things that annoys me about our summer climate is how rare it is to get a day where it is wall to wall sunshine and calm. Most of the time there is some sort of cloud around and/or a breeze.

Even today - it's really warm out there already, but in the last hour there is more cloud around than sun and a pretty substantial breeze. What often seems to happen is it'll stay that way until later afternoon when it'll become mainly sunny again and the breeze will drop.

(wall to wall sunshine and calm air is much nicer at -5c )

Edit: of course, the real problem is that we live on an island, never more than a few dozen miles from the sea, and not in the middle of a vast continent - and our weather tends to reflect that.  Odd that ....

Just goes to show how quickly next week's hot spell has appeared that as recently as four days ago Matty said this:

"The only thing missing is proper heat. That doesn't look like materialising anytime soon"

Not meant as a dig at Matty as that was true then. It came up out of nowhere really.

At the risk of sounding like a winter post - I think FI is around Wednesday at the moment, although it may be fair to say any charts should never be taken as gospel at 5 days out no matter what they are showing. We've constantly been projected to break down here over the last few weeks, but in reality we've now had a good three weeks of very useable, mainly dry and often warm weather.

I wonder what else is in store moving forward

Well we've certainly paid for what was an excellent May and June and start to July, although areas further north didn't even get that. Utter garbage since then and the charts are currently dreadful into early August. Still plenty of time for things to change.

My guess: boiling hot over the nearby continent, either the same here or we're plagued by NWlies

There is one thing I think most of us have missed with regard to this summer. There is one clue which has given away the fact that summer is over and there will not be a return to warm weather. I've noticed it and its this - Its flies. The presence of flies. I noticed it about 10 days ago now when I was in my local pub. There were about half a dozen or so flies hanging about the bar. I didn't think much about it at the time - then I noticed that I had a similar number in my kitchen. I only see these like this usually about the end of September/ early October.

I have noticed them in a number of shops and other places I have been in this past week.

I don't know what others think of this one - but its more than a gut feeling to me that we have seen the last of summer.

Just 9 days have reached 20C here and all but three of them were when I was in Ibiza

Highest temperature I have experienced here was just 21.6C which is desperately poor. Today was the 14th day out of 22 since I got back that failed to even reach 16C

The dire temperatures are the least objectionable element of this horrendous car-crash of a season. Pales in significance compared to the wettest July since 1970 with only 15 hours sun more than January and February managed
