Will no doubt be gone on the 6z, but this is without a doubt the earliest I have EVER seen a -10 isotherm on the charts (just to the southwest of Svarlbard) on August 2nd.

Blimey that really is early. Winter is on the way folks!

Latest BBC weather week ahead says no mention of high temps beyond Thursday. Down to average from then well into next week with weak fronts crossing west to east

It will interesting to see what extent the CET gets pushed up and whether we get an above average July as a result.

Lets hope that this ECM doom laden chart for Thursday week is a real outlier and doesn't come off! Otherwise we will be back to the dreadful dross of much of this summer so far...

High pressure tries desperately to hang on after the weekend on the GFS 12z op run, but eventually gives way to low pressure. FI is pretty shocking it must be saud. Good job it's FI!

What is interesting to me is how capable we are of reaching exceptionally high temperatures even in a generally cool and unsettled summer nowadays. If we can at some stage in the next few years tap into a longer feed from the south in July then I am pretty certain that the 40c threshold will be reached sooner rather than later.
This is a one day only offer tomorrow but a longer lasting feed from the south would almost certainly result in a mega heatwave one day soon.
I will say that this will happen and probably sooner than we may think.
I reckon by 2020 somewhere in the UK will have recorded 40c. It's just a matter of time.

With quite a lot of uncertainty around over the next 2 weeks i wouldn't be at all surprised if we don't get another burst of 'real heat and summer' in early August. For the south at least this coming weekend is looking more than fair with high pressure rebuilding.....
