Lots of pics on FB from the local area here too but when you realise the pictures posted aren't quite what the human eye saw it does lose something.

There'll be an element of this going on with the phone-taken photos of the aurora... definitely algorithmic enhancement, if nothing else.

(It's a shame that regular cameras are now such a rare sight amongst the general public. Even the latest Pixel 8 Pro with all its fancy AI can't take as nice a shot of a wolf, for example, as my "bridge" camera, and it does that without even trying. They are, however, superficially excellent if it's a common subject for the photo!)

And while on the topic, cones do stereoscopic vision while rods detect motion.

"Red Alert - Aurora likely." Probably at higher latitudes: but you never know...

No aurora here, but how's this for a shot of the sun? I noticed there was a veil of high cloud dimming it, somewhat, so took a chance with my ancient bridge camera... it turned out well, I think! You can clearly see all the sunpots... lots of them at the moment.

(No filters or anything were needed either, just point and shoot.)

Lunar occultation of Saturn, Wednesday 21 August 2024:

On Wednesday morning, viewers in the UK will be able to witness the planet Saturn disappear behind the Moon, weather permitting of course. The disappearance will occur at around 04:28 BST, around the start of dawn, and then remerge at 05:13 BST.

I was right. Surprised no one else noticed that or was interested in this (other than Beast)!

I did spot this event on "Aurorawatch". The data is still there if you are interested.
"During the late hours of Aug. 30th, a crack opened in Earth's magnetic field. Solar wind flowed through the gap, sparking a G1-class geomagnetic storm with auroras in both Europe and the USA."

"A CME hit Earth's magnetic field today, Sept. 4th at 1030 UTC. The unexpected impact jolted the USGS magnetometer in Boulder, CO, by 40 nT, a fairly stout blow. G1 to G2 geomagnetic storm watches are in effect as a result of the CME's arrival."
