I have to admit that I liked the fact that the govt yesterday went against the public mood, let's see though what happens if things change at the frontline.

I have been lambasted on TWO by some in the past for criticising the WHO. Well here is the respected commentator Ed Conway in the Times, shredding its response to the outbreak:

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/comment/virus-has-exposed-the-weakness-of-who-5t7h089nc

"...

(WHO)

had neglected its core mission: to be an institution of last resort in a crisis no single country can fight.

The result was that in the early weeks of the crisis the WHO was too slow to declare a public health emergency. For all the good work being done by its officials, it has become clear that the institution desperately lacks influence. It is terrified of speaking truth to power. It is so strapped, so reliant on funding from big countries, that it cannot bear to call out the US for the speed of its response or China for its faults in the early weeks of the disease.

The WHO could and should be the ultimate authority and the ultimate resource for health security, yet much like the IMF in the early days of the (credit crunch) crisis, it needs beefing up. Perhaps that means more money. Perhaps it means creating a new independent body which could fight pandemics without fear of closure if it said something awkward to a superpower. Whatever the solution, this, like 2008, is a moment for world leaders to reinforce global institutions.

I have been accused of hysteria on here for advocating the closure of borders, when that was indeed the only way to reduce the spread of the virus. But honestly Brian, the notion that the fittest and healthiest of young men could be at risk of dying from this is either trolling or a joke. I doubt that any young footballers will die from this, although a few of the more elderly managers could be at risk.

I am supposed to fly in Milan in mid-May, it wouldn't surprise me if things were under control there by that time, but flights out of the UK were banned.

I must admit I don't pretend to understand this logic by the chief medical officer.

Build up natural immunity yes, but surely we need to slow it down as well.

My better half went to sainsburys this morning and apparently the supermarket was fully stocked except for hand sanitiser. That did surprise me actually.

I have to be honest, I'm extremely concerned and stress levels are rising. Many people I've spoken to are also experiencing a deep sense of foreboding about what may happen. This feeling is very widespread and you are definitely not alone.

But the clear evidence has been from the outset, that if you want to keep it out, you have to close and monitor all borders.

P.S. When Trump does this, everybody shouts about it, but it is the one sensible thing he has done so far:

"Several Latin American countries have halted flights as they try to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Argentina said it would suspend for 30 days flights from all European countries, as well the US, China, Iran, Japan and South Korea, which have also been impacted by the virus.

Peru has suspended for an unspecified period of time all flights from Europe and Asia while Paraguay is cancelling all direct flights to and from Europe until 26 March.

Venezuela had already suspended all flights from Europe for a month."
