Greece keeps escalating its measures although they still have a small number of deaths (5 I think):

  • All land borders closed to people except Greek citizens

  • all ports closed to cruise ships

  • flights banned from Spain

  • All visitors from other countries will be quarantined for 14 days

  • Closure of stores extended to all retail shops except supermarkets, pharmacies, petrol stations and home delivery stores

  • Private hospitals nationalised

Government doesn't even know what it's doing now.

The data was released on its own website at 14:05

What annoys me about all this border closure stuff is that, if ever there was a time to do this, it was last month, not this month.

I question whether there is even any point in doing it now.

The reasoning last month was the economic effects were too severe. That might have been right. But now we have the worst of both worlds. Economic effects + ineffective border closures.

Come off it Gandalf - you were one of the ones trying to play down the whole issue when it first became apparent.

Whilst the Government should have taken measures to obtain an increase in ventilator supply a couple of months ago, that would have meant taking the outbreak in China in January absolutely seriously from the outset, including tighter travel restrictions at the time - something you said was "hysterical" and unnecessary.

Perhaps a county by county approach is called for, plus national bans for national events.

I'm sure the Government hasn't fully thought through complete isolation for the over-70s. There are those who can't work computers to order food online; there are those who live in neighbourhoods where there are a high proportion of over-70s so neighbourly help is a problem; and others who depend utterly on carers to wash and dress them and indeed feed them (my wife being a case in point). Social distancing would be manageable (the idea of a supermarket having early opening so that older people can do their shopping at a distance from each other is good) but complete isolation for FOUR months could result in starvation for some and extreme distress for others.

Pakistan numbers ticking up now - given their population density and lack of sophisticated healthcare, Pakistan could easily become the next Iran in the region.

As for Turkey - their extremely low numbers clearly have to be taken with a pinch of salt - Kazakhstan has reported its first case: a woman who had traveled to Istanbul, Turkey

Definitely seems we are in damage limitation mode rn.

Also as bad as things are we just have to hope this thing doesn't mutate into something more potent. With so much viral DNA about the longer this lasts the greater something even nastier will turn up.

I admire your optimism, but I foresee nothing but misery as the fallout from this. The economic consequences are going to take years to rinse through, and there will be wholesale hardship for millions..

I - and the vast majority, I'd suspect - don't want to be forced to stop taking 'cheap overseas holidays'. I don't want people to face massive upheaval and be put into a position of having to rely on others. I don't want the additional burden of having others rely on me.

I'm also 100% sure that there will be no utopian 'repositioning' of economic fortunes. Avaricious millionaires won't suddenly develop a sense of philanthropic benevolence and stop seeking loopholes to cheat their way out of paying 40% tax on all their income (above the higher rate threshold). The tax havens of the British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies won't suddenly draw back the curtains on the secretive world of wealth- and asset-hiding and tax dodging. Banksters won't suddenly cut borrowers some slack and write-off interest and forced missed payments, let alone forgive debt wholesale (despite the taxpayer previously stopping their whole stinking, greedy & corrupt system from collapsing).

And no government will dare upset the corporate-capitalism applecart. Or should that be gravy train?

So yes, on a local and individual level, there will be countless heroes who help other people and try to keep society functioning - and we'll all be encouraged to celebrate these people by 'the powers that be' to give a veneer of cheer in order to distract us from looking at the obvious villains and crooks who'll be safely ensconced in their ivory towers.

The numbers we have just published today (More test, less positives) is surely a good thing? Why do I feel dubious though?

I have just checked the department of health on Twitter and they have said as of 37 minutes ago that the numbers will be published later this afternoon.

I have a feeling the figures being quoted are for Wales and Scotland and England’s figures are not within that number

I really would not put it past this govt to start massaging the figures. That and lying are the only things it is good at.
