We went out as a family for a longish walk over the local fields this afternoon. We kept looking up at the sky and thinking it looked odd. Could not work it out - until it suddenly dawned - no contrails at all.

I feel a little more reassured tonight. Am I wrong to feel this?

The best performance by Boris by some distance: clear, sombre, serious.

He has gone up in my estimation.

So many questions on enforcement though. At any point if you get stopped by the police, surely you can just say you’re going food shopping?

Claiming you're going food shopping when you're not is just the same as what we saw at the weekend: wilful stupidity.

I presume schools are now closing completely? They weren’t mentioned as an exception for leaving the house.

The UKs lockdown will be reviewed again in 3-weeks which will be Easter Monday.

Given that the official numbers being released are not growing as fast as some feared, you have to assume that behind the scenes they know things are far worse than officially let on, to have taken this action.

Regarding people claiming they are going shopping when they are not, really why would they bother? It’s not like there is going to be anything to do anywhere!

There will always be some contrails though - loads of freight  goes by air.  Even if there are no passengers on the plane, some are still contracted  to fly becuase of what else they are carrying.

As I think most people here will already know, I am no fan of Boris Johnson. That said, in my opinion, he has 100% done the right thing tonight.

If this proves be the difference between life and death for a great many people, then so be it. I for one will not complain for a second.

For me and my wife, nothing changes with tonight's announcement - we were already doing everything asked of tonight. I am just glad that I was able to get a new set of tyres fitted to our car on Saturday, since the old tyres were right down to the legal limit.

I’ll be interested to see if the police have the resources to manage the new measures. My gut feeling is, in cities anyway, they’ll have their work cut out in the next few weeks.

What is classed as "essential work"?
This evenings announcement not unexpected.
At least it will be mild!

That was the advice given to me today from a doctor who phoned me from my local hospital; I am in one of the more at risk groups as I suffer from Inflammatory Bowel Disease which I was diagnosed with in 2007. The medication I take for this suppresses my immune system, meaning I am more at risk of catching COVID-19 than someone my age with full immunity.

Excellent move by the government. The UK's u-turn is now complete and time has been wasted but better late than never. If necessary the army should be used to help the police enforce the new measures.

I wonder if stores like B&Q will remain open? There’s likely to be occasions where people will need materials for emergency repairs on their houses, as an example.

For me, the restrictions regarding outdoor movement that he announced last Monday should have been put in place at the beginning of March, when the government first admitted that there was likely to be a widespread outbreak of coronavirus across the UK. IIRC, the number of confirmed cases in the UK at this time was much lower than now. If those still hadn't worked then, a full lockdown should have been imposed a week ago.

Finally some decisive and clear measures from HMG and first time Johnson appeared prime ministerial. They are about a week too late, but it's much better to be late than sorry. Of course, the measures won't be enforced properly and in their totality, but they should still have a big impact slowing down the contagion.

I guess some people here might not like the measures because they see it like the govt treating us like children, but that's life.
