Happy birthday in advance and yes it’s worth keeping an eye out for the risk of snow for your birthday. Even in Aberdeen I’ve never had snow on my birthday which is disappointing…but then again my birthday is in July. 🤡

Anyway brief summary of the models’ output this evening cooler and unsettled then milder and potentially more settled, with all the usual caveats given the time scales. This is backed up by the 12z ECM ensemble data.

Works the other way as well for some of those hilariously looking for cold all the time. Of course they are never pulled to task about it. They’re seen as good eggs.

Their motives for doing so are whatever they are.

But it's so tiresome.

They put snow on my 50th Birthday on 16th Jan, even if a brief one at least to see snowfall on my day then a bit colder on Tuesday but dry then jump back to above average so heating costs will not be high as last month.

Old one seems to have disappeared!

GFS looks blocked on this run post cold NW blast.

The output look based on the 00z runs (so far) continues the recent pattern of colder and unsettled conditions in the short to medium term and then probably something more settled beyond that.

Yep cold spell still on 15th to 20th. NW looks like doing well snow wise. After that probably mild returns perhaps very mild.

Interesting to see such very big changes in the very short term. Today's forecast widespread heavy rain for Wales and the Southwest has all but gone from the forecast. Thank god it wasn't supposed to be snow!

Looks like the GFS is having a go at splitting the SPV.

The op run was something of an oddball though.

The 35 day charts look less interesting, although they are 24 hours older.

WX charts - colder weather trickling into W Europe in week 2, but counterbalanced by warmth in the E moving N from the Black Sea. Rain on Atlantic coasts and up into the Baltic (probably snow there) in week 1 replaced by rain in the E Med while the Atlantic pptn removes itself up to Iceland.

GFS Op - zonal to start with, but the LPs on increasingly S-ly tracks (Fri 13th and Sun 15th in northern N Sea), eventually by Wed 18th 960mb E Scotland having pulled down a lot of Arctic air to cover Britain. But that fills and drifts E-wards as ridge of HP develops from the SW becoming a large area of HP centred 1035mb over Britain Fri 27th

ECM - has similarities to GFS but on Wed 18th the area of LP is further E and S (990mb Sweden and W Germany) so W Britain escapes the worst of the Arctic. That LP also fills more quickly, and the HP sets up much earlier, 1040mb Baltic Sun 22nd, with Scotland under SW-lies and England under SE-lies

GEFS - temps generally decreasing with bursts of rain in the coming week, to become cold and somewhat drier from 17th -22nd Jan, after which agreement between ens members breaks down, some runs showing rain and some not (but many wetter later on in W), temp range  at  various stations on 26th Jan from 10C above mean to 15C below. Snow row figures typically in 20s in Scotland around the 18th, in the teens even in the far S.

ECM is keener on a shorter colder spell though.  Though main models display a strong signal for milder from the 22cnd onwards it seems to be a question of how HP dominated it then becomes and where any High cells position themselves.

We are sleep walking into a nice looking little cold spell next week. Decent snow event on offer for those on the northern flank of Tuesdays southerly tracking deep low.
