I have to say I have a feeling that the World Cup will be a dull and defensive affair for the most part - lots of buses being parked . I suspect there will be a great deal of diving, cheating, feigning injury and time wasting to add to the "spectacle" of the World Cup.

Do Brazil have a stupid name I've never heard before that will have me despising them mere days into the tournament? 'Bafana Bafana' and it's constant use on ITV and BBC had me wanting them to lose every game 40-0. At the very least we don't have to listen to various commentators telling us how special the Ireland fans are, and how the tournament would be around 95% less wonderful without a bunch of blokes dressed in green wearing tamoshanters acting childish.

Roy has taken England to the next level and Rooney is going to win it for us. I'm confident.

LOL, ongoing tube strike in Sao Paulo and now airport workers in Rio have announced a 24-hour strike. England fans, at least, will feel at home.

Much as I hate to admit it I still love this penalty from Pirlo against England. Sublime stuff.

Can only get better from here. THE worst opening ceremony for any sporting tournament I have ever seen.

Dreadful song btw.  Hopefully this game provides some entertainment and justifies the lack of work I am getting done today (I also discovered earlier that the ESPN mobile phone app also streams the live Sky Sports cricket broadcast including commentary, so that was running all morning).

Going forward Brazil are very good but defensively they are no better than average and the best sides will cause them problems. It's a great game though rare for an opening game.

The World Cup has started. Or so I'm told. I can't recall so little excitment in the lead up to a football World Cup. No idea whether it's the FIFA issues, hosting it in a rubbish timezone for European viewers, or expecations management for England.

Two refereeing calamities are the only reason Brazil aren't still a goal down. Joke.
