The way to deal with it is to lay on transport for London NHS staff - there are plenty of Uber and Taxi drivers kicking their heels at the moment. Critical staff should not be expected to have to use public transport in places like London.

According to a poll for La Repubblica 94% of Italians support the strict lockdown and 72% think it should have been implemented earlier.

Germany has also started taking hospitalised patients from Italy and France.

Just anecdotes but an interesting thread starting in the link below about construction workers and how they feel forced to turn up to work in conditions where disease could spread quickly.

The issue is that my manager was going to deliver the equipment personally, literally picking it up from the closed offices and bringing it to my house to set it up. Obviously neither of us wants that to happen now, indeed it is prohibited. I’m sure we can sort something out but it might take another couple of days.

Not that I am likely to have very much work to do anyway. My new job is with a charity and all the events I would have been promoting have of course been cancelled!

Germany has FAR fewer patients in critical / intensive care than most other countries. Something clearly is different and it can't be attributed to COVID-19 not being recorded as cause of death.

IIRC their CFR data don’t record all deaths as Covid-19 if there was another underlying health condition.

I would suggest that construction businesses are told either they lay on coaches for their people or they close their sites.

Given the absolutely clear message last night, and the tone in which it was delivered, it beggars belief that business owners haven’t worked out what they need to do.

I keep wondering at what stage the critics will realise that it’s people making stupid, thoughtless decisions that’s the problem and not government failures.

I suspect you’re right and it’s quite obvious why London is a virus hotspot.  My life is nothing like that, I’m pleased to say.  Whenever I had to go to London on business trips, I was always pleased to get home to a slower, less populated rural existence.

Those images show that stronger measures will be needed.

As I have stated previously - now is the ideal time to get on with building and maintenance, particularly where our transport arteries are concerned - one of the biggest construction sites in London is Euston for HS2 for example. Only a few months ago they were worrying about the disruption caused to normal travel by the work - so in the current circumstances, it should be accelerated.

The contructuon issue will be the big story of the day.

They are having to go into work because either their employer is insisting it’s business as usual or they cannot afford to stay off.

It’s a total clusterfuck

There are financial penalties in construction contracts for late completion. Many firms are worried about being penalised for not finishing work on time. Until these clauses are waived or otherwise dealt with, sites will continue to work.

Also, many self-employed construction workers live a hand to mouth existence and rely on site work to survive. It's a tough problem.

I don't think there are any easy answers to this, it's not possible to simply close down society and the economy indefinitely. The fall out will negatively impact more people than the virus itself.

How are other countries that have restricted movement dealt with construction work?
At least it will be mild!

I’m not saying it should be free but surely the cabs have capacity at the moment.
