Latest forecast pretty much as you were.

Lots of snow showers for Scotland, NI & NW England. Look like a wintry/sleety mix for the Midlands south.

Overnight and into tomorrow the Midlands look like they could see some snow showers and the South still seeing the wintry/sleety stuff.

Looking forward to seeing some of the totals from up North though. smile

Has somebody forgotten to update the Met O contingency planners? Well over a month since the last update. Perhaps they are waiting until Feb has started, to make their assessment.

Mind you, they probably have other things on their mind at the moment!

(seriously, not sure why the Jan one isn't on the website yet, though if the MetO did stop putting on there to stop the gutter press misinterpreting them, I wouldn't blame them!)

I rather like the wording for the Sat/Sun weather warning.

The daily BBC N Weather for the week ahead at 9:55pm will be an interesting one but I bet the forecaster will go as far as Friday or Saturday and then give a summary - I sense a lot of uncertainty and vagueness in it. At the moment Alex Deakin is only forecasting as far ahead as tomorrow 3pm and then gives a summary of the weekend.

But wait? So frustrating ! It's not even cold enough yet.

Philip Avery really ramping up the snow for all the country from Saturday onwards and into next week and plenty of showers and a feature in the SE on Friday. Specifically mentoned the Chilts and the Downs for settling snow. The snow will cause disruption. N24 @ 11:28

It'll be typical if one was issued now LOL

This is yet another BIG let down for us in the South East despite all the ramping's on here and in the media the temperatures shown are all around 6 degrees for the next week. So hardly a freeze worth talking about, unless we get a beast or NE in the next few weeks I think the fat lady can start clearing her throat for this winter.

New forecast on here from Alex Deakin. Snow showers for quite a few in the next 24 hours. Turning milder from Friday. Weekend temps around 6 or 7c for many across England in a mainly dry weekend picture. Will feel bitter apparently, but history tells me it won't here in a direct northerly. Plenty of sunny spells should make it feel relatively pleasant.

Haven't seen that one, so will take your word for it. The Deakin one is definitely new though.

Also ties in with Fergusson's thoughts on twitter, admittedly that's more regional than the south overall. I also think that ties in with the current output. There's certainly nothing to suggest a snowy weekend overall. Areas exposed to the north winds will always get some shower activity, but apart from that it's a dry picture.

Now, of course, small scale features can and do crop up in the flow, but to try and pinpoint them in any way is a lottery.

The UK outlook. A textbook northerly setting up into the weekend:

Today:
Another cold day with sunny spells and further wintry showers, mainly in the north and west. Snow will increasingly become confined to the hills of the northwest through the day. Drier in the southeast, with winds easing in the east.

Tonight:
Outbreaks of rain, sleet and hill snow move south-eastwards across Scotland and northern England. Wintry showers continuing in the west. Remaining breezy with a widespread frost likely.

Friday:
Outbreaks of rain, sleet and hill snow clear the southeast. Elsewhere, sunny spells and wintry showers, mainly in the north and west. Some further snow likely over hills. Remaining windy.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:
Colder northerly winds establish on Saturday, bringing snow showers to northern parts and extending to windward coasts on Sunday and Monday, with drier conditions further inland. Widespread overnight frosts.

Latest BBC1 forecast with Alex D seemed to suggest that most of what falls from tomorrow and over the weekend will be wet rather that white unless you live up a hill.
